Going Green: Green Features You Can Expect to See in Homes in Canada in 2025

In 2025, homes in Canada are expected to be “greener” than ever. From new home features to government grants aimed at facilitating the implementation of green and sustainable systems for homes, the future is looking bright (and greener than ever!) for homes in Canada. Today, we’re looking at the benefits of having green features in your home, what new green features you can expect to see more of in homes this year, and what government initiatives are being introduced to help homeowners go green in 2025.

Benefits of implementing green features in your home

There are many benefits to implementing green features in your home, from improving indoor air quality to saving money on your energy bills - and of course, supporting a healthier and more sustainable planet.

Improved air quality

Homes outfitted with green features will offer occupants better air quality with less exposure to carbon dioxide and other harmful organic compounds. Structures that qualify as “green” are designed with higher rates of ventilation, which supports healthier air quality for less risk of illnesses such as asthma.

Saving on your energy bills and consumption

Green features such as insulation work to keep your home at a comfortable and stable temperature, minimizing overuse of heating and cooling systems. Other energy-saving green features include energy-efficient lighting and appliances. In both cases, these energy-efficient devices utilize less energy to achieve the same result and performance, minimizing energy usage and resulting in higher energy savings.

Green roofing is another sustainable feature of green homes that are proven to reduce energy consumption. Also growing in popularity are bio-based materials like bamboo, which is a renewable material with a smaller environmental footprint compared to other common materials.

Systems that harvest rainwater are also energy-efficient in their ability to reduce energy consumption.

One more commonly known green feature that has been steadily growing in popularity and use for some time is solar panel technology, another renewable system that can significantly minimize energy consumption.

Green features benefit the environment

Green features in a home not only minimize energy consumption and result in savings, but it also benefits our environment, reducing harmful greenhouse emissions and contributing to rebuilding the ozone layer while also reducing our reliance on traditional energy sources that are not renewable.

Additional benefits of green homes

  • They tend to be more durable
  • They have lower utility bills

Builders in 2025 will be focusing on sustainable materials to satisfy the growing demand for eco-conscious building and home design. The integration of renewable energy systems like green roofs and solar panels will continue to grow in demand and popularity, as well as the preference for advanced HVAC units where energy consumption is significantly reduced.

2025 green building trends will reveal more rainwater harvesting systems, natural ventilation, sustainable materials, green roofs and the usage of low-carbon concrete.

Government initiatives being introduced in 2025 to support greener homes

In Canada, the government has gotten on board with green housing trends and is working to make the implementation of green features and green building strategies more commonplace and accessible to homeowners and builders alike.

One such initiative is The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP). This initiative offers no-cost retrofitting of green features to low-to-median-income homeowners and tenants in Canada.

There is also the Energy Efficiency Act, which is being revisited and reworked to reflect modern times.

Another affordability-focused initiative is the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program, which focuses on providing funding for new heat pumps for existing homes in place of oil furnaces.

As we go forward in 2025, it’s become abundantly clear that only through proactive and conscious choices can we collectively make a difference toward sustainable building and environmentally-conscious living in order to make a positive impact for our planet. The issue of climate change is a global one, and we must work together to ensure a healthier environment for generations to come.

With government initiatives centered on climate goals, energy efficiency, green-building adoption and technological advancement, we are working towards a future based in healthy living and environmental balance. These initiatives and the power of conscious choices, big and small, are what will drive the building industry forward in a sustainable fashion for the betterment of all.
